Is Collection the Best Way? Scarecrow

About one-quarter of what is in our garbage is food scraps and non-recyclable paper items like napkins and egg cartons, which can all be composted to create nutrient-rich soil.
While creating compost is certainly better than wasting, some methods of composting may be more environmentally beneficial than others. For example, backyard composting and worm composting at home are effective ways to reduce our waste before we even have to collect materials in a truck, avoiding emissions from transportation.
Eureka Recycling recently began a temporary project in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood in Saint Paul to learn more about this and many other questions surrounding a plan for citywide composting, to meet our collective goal of becoming a waste-free city by 2020.  Learn more...

Eureka Recycling measures the Carbon Footprint of Composting
The energy saving benefits of recycling has been touted for years—for example, making a new aluminum can from old cans results in 90-97% energy savings compared to making a new can from bauxite and other raw materials—but calculations about the benefits of composting are just surfacing. We now have a full report prepared on the environmental benefits of recycling and composting. You can read it to learn more or simply take the Minnesota Energy Challenge to see how you can make a difference by recycling and composting.
